I’d been searching for two days for the book that contained the prophecy, only stopping to eat and sleep. The library was vast, with shelves that ran endlessly, as far as the eye could see. Nieve had taken it upon herself to disclose the missing element—my child. The book with the information about my child was nowhere to be found. I was also right about her—she still hadn’t been located.

Felix cleared his throat. I spun around to see him standing in the doorway.

“Apologies if I startled you, my love,” he said, “But you have been up here for so long. Perhaps Nieve might’ve hidden the book or destroyed it.”

“I can’t give up. Not now.” I focused on the books in front of me—their spines were worn and faded with age.

“I’ve told the Elves of our plans to wed.” He crossed the space between us and slipped an arm around my waist. “Preparations will be made at a more appropriate time. Let our marriage act as a beacon of hope in a dark time.”

I pressed my forehead against his, breathing in his warm scent.

“Why don’t you come outside and get some fresh air? You’ll see what the others have done in preparation. Eric is helping the guards and archers. They are on high alert,” he said.

The sound of horns boomed through the Citadel, tearing my gaze from Felix. “What was that?”

“Stay here. I’ll find out.” He dashed from the room.

I hurried to the window to see the stone soldiers standing side by side and slashing Orcs in half. Swords clashed against hammers as the Orcs tried to breach the protection spell and cross the bridge. Elven guards drew their swords of Arogathean steel and marched forth to battle the invaders.

Rangers were at the top of the towers drawing arrows, freeing them into the chaos below.

The council members, Eric, Felix, the Humans, and Centaur soldiers joined in to hold back the encroaching Orcs. A group of Orcs fought another Orc, but I couldn’t see his face. I opened the window and leaned out for a better view. Xurek tried to push his attackers off.

Several of them succumbed to the natural magic coursing through the ground and staggered, yet they did not retreat. One stumbled, hunched over, his face contorted by the pain caused by the lake’s natural magic. ‘The lake’s magic repels all darkness and causes excruciating pain to those who pose a threat.’ Felix was right.

The Orc let out an earth-shaking, terrifying roar.

The remaining Orcs withdrew and hurried away from the lake. I fled from the window to meet injured soldiers and council members.

“Take the wounded to the healers for treatment at once.” I urged the guards towards the hunched men with wounds.

“Why have they come here?” Kiirion shoved his sword back into its scabbard.

Felix’s footsteps boomed through the foyer. “Xurek is out there on the bridge. You need to order the guards to free him. They’ve got his arms bound and have confiscated his hammer.”

“I saw him from the window.” I hurried out of the room, through the arched doorways, then pushed past the guards.
